Forward Festival, for the first time in Zurich
Three weeks ago, I had the chance to participate, thanks to a generous invitation by Diesel, at the Forward Festival, a conference for design, communication and creativity. It was founded in Vienna some years ago, last year they added Munich to their schedule and this year it took for the very first time place in Zurich, at the Freitag F-Fabrik at NOERD.
I didn’t really know what I had to expect, but the program sounded promising. What I’ve experienced however exceeded all my expectations. Over twenty creative bureaus, graphic designers, artists and innovative companies from all over the world held speeches about their work, every speaker had a slot of 45 minutes. Does this sound boring? It wasn’t at all on the contrary!
Eight hours captivated
Can you imagine I was sitting there during over eight hours with no feeling of thirst or hunger, or need to go to the bathroom?! I was so captivated by all these inspiring stories. I learned for example about a Swedish shower beer (Snask), how many cans of color a street artists needed for an over dimensional snake on a wall of 900m2 (Nychos), how graphic designer Niklaus Troxler got his inspiration for his top 50 posters, and much more.
If I wrote something about every single company, this text would become a novel of 500 pages, therefore I would love to extract the essence, which I felt all speakers had in common:
- If you have a vision, if you believe in something just dare to do it, no matter what others say
- Never make money to be the driver of your commitment, if you do something you are passionate about, a project you always wanted to realize even though it’s not commercial, do it! Too often it turns out to be one of the most succesful ones! And if not, at least it was fun doing it.
- If you hire or cooperate with people, trust them, you would have not hired them if you didn’t trust them
- The most simple ideas are sometimes to most successful ones, don’t try to be over-arty, if you don’t feel like
I am convinced that every self-employed, especially one-man/woman shows, knows these moments of doubt or the disappointment when projects are not as successful as planned.
To listen to all these inspiring people and companies, strengthened my confidence that I am on the right way, doing jobs and projects (like this blog for example) that I love.
I would love to thank Diesel again for this incredible invitation and I already look forward to next years edition.
