Today is such an amazing day that I don’t know where to start. Maybe with the most important factor; the weather: sunshine and blue sky!
I follow this photographer Jamie Beck on Snapchat and she once snapped the Cafe Cluny in West Village as one of her favourite breakfast spots. We decide to check it out.
The area, West Village, is definitely hyper cool! There are many sweet little cafes and restaurants, and I would love to visit all of them. But let’s stick to the plan and go to Cluny’s. It is packed and we get the last table. It’s a small place with a low ceiling, a lot of plain or white painted wood, with botanical drawings on the walls. The menu looks promising, the prices on the other hand frightening. Never mind, we are already seated. We both order a plate; I don’t even dare to order a coffee; if the food ist hat expensive, the drinks are for sure not much less. I go for the smoked sable benedict and I must admit, it is delicious.
After breakfast we take up our yesterdays plan and walk along the piers to the 9/11 memorial. It is impressive! After that a quick turn at Wallstreet down to Pier 11,we rent CitiBikes. This is a great option which we have just discovered today. You can buy either a 24h pass for US 9.95 or a 7 days pass for USD 25 and you can use the bikes for units of 30 minutes. Then you have to bring it back to another station, wait two minutes and grab a new bike. It might sound complicated, but there are so many Citibike stations that this is not a problem at all. On the contrary, it is kind of fun and makes you aware of the time and distances. I think this is a really cool and economic way of getting to know New York.
We drive with our CitiBike along the piers up to the High Line. This historically used to be an elevated freight railline which was converted in to a park of over 2km lenght. Everytime I go to New York I visit the highline. It is constantly developing and also hosting temporary exhibitions. At the moment the cooperation between the chain „target“ and the design brand „marimekko“ is promoted with some workshops. Check out the video we have shot there!
At the end of the High Line our next Citibike is waiting for us and we drive back to the start where we meet with a friend of mine, the actress Nadine Kübler. She moved almost four years ago to New York, to study at the New York Concervatory for dramatic arts. She played already in several short films, commercials and web series. Last year she had her NYC Theater debut in „Old Haunts“. It is interesting to hear from her how it feels to live and work in New York.
Just before sunset we take the Subway to Brooklyn and cultivate our being a tourist: We watch the sunset in front of Manhattans Skyline. No words needed; it is just amazing!
A little pre-dinner workout with the Citibike up to Brooklyn Heights where we enjoy dinner and back to the hotel to prepare our suitcases, because tomorrow we move on.
