Shall I or shall I not?
Tell you about my today’s shopping experience? A negative shopping experience.
I usually don’t like to write about negative topics, because fashion is fun and reading my blog should be as entertaining as writing it. But I think I still want to tell you about what happened to me today, because I was really disappointed.
In Switzerland I usually don’t do a lot of shopping, because I am often abroad and I love to do trend and fashion scouting in foreign countries. But today I had a spare hour and really felt like getting inspired by my hometown’s fashion stores.
First I went to PKZ Women, a fashion store with three floors and several brands. My first impression: an ocean of yellow 50%-tags. Fair enough, it is sale-time (I was not even aware of that). At least the clothes exhibited in a nice way. On the ground floor and basement I was meagerly welcomed by some of the employees but this was already it. Nobody was too keen on helping me. And I did need help. In the fitting room I would have needed different sizes, I didn’t know where to leave the clothes I didn’t want to buy etc. but far and wide only ignorance.
On the top floor, where the more expensive brands are sold, I felt entirely stupid. I know, I have classic-pink hair and I did not wear any makeup but I was somehow dressed up and did not look that bad. But while the predominantly Eastern European shop assistants took care of the mainly Eastern European clients in a very caring way, they gave me only a very contemptuous look. I actually wanted to try some blouses on, but the message was very clear: It’s high time to change to store!
Next stop was Mango. I was not prepared for this: Clothes all over; it was hardly possible to move! I love sales, because often you find some bargains, lovely pieces at a fabulous price, but this explosion of cheap clothes was breath-taking, and not in a positive way.
Fashion is a creative process with dozends of people involved. Starting with the idea, the design, the pattern, choosing the materials, sewing it etc. and it feels like an insult to all these people involved in the process. All this work has to be honoured by a nice presentation of their piece of art. But what I’ve seen reminded me somehow on factory farming. I know, clothes doesn’t have feelings, but still…
That’s also the reason why I don’t even consider stepping into shops such as Chicorée, Terranova etc.
H&M for example offers also very attractive prices, but the designs are presented in such a very nice way, that you see and appreciate the beauty of it and the work behind it.
Conclusion: I tried to skim through the clothes and find one or the other jewel, but I gave un after five minutes and fled. I’ve seen enough! At least I found one nice blouse from Tommy Hilfiger at PKZ, but it was no fun at all finding it.
